My cat started freaking out on the thing and has been just loving it ever since. The scratch pad is pretty rough too, more so than my nail file, so it seems it will last a while.The other Emery Cat was given to my father because his cat had already tore the shreds out the cat scratcher he bought at Wal-Mart. The Emery Cat should last longer than the store bought card-board cat scratcher. I received two Emery Cat scratch pads last week. I threw it out. I would NOT recommend this product. Get a scratching pole to keep them off the furniture. One of my cats like carpet, the other likes jute.
