There was a time in my life (post college) when I looked in the mirror and I thought ”something has got to change”, the scale confirmed it with my weight nearing 170 lbs at only 5'6”. So I joined a gym, one of those all female circuit ones. I'll admit it was a great first step but I soon became bored with the same routine and I wasn't getting the results I wanted. Then it was onto a “real” gym where they designed a weight lifting program for me and then I would supplement the workout with cardio classes. I turned into a gym junkie. My body was looking good, I had lost around 15-20 lbs and was doing a a great job of maintaining my new shape and size. I thought “ok, this is the best my body has ever been and this is the best it's going to get”.

Then I entered another phase in my life where I was moving around every 3-6 months and the gym wasn't practical or cost efficient anymore. I didn't want to undo all my hard work so I started doing “old school” aerobic videos, you know like the step and kickboxing ones, but had no real weight lifting routine. The videos weren't very challenging and the people in the videos were often fake and annoying. One day my friend tells me he has a workout out program I absolutely have to try because he knew I was looking for a challenging workout. It was P90X. I had seen the infomercial, but you know how that goes, looks good but does it really work? Because my friend wasn't really a “workout guy” and I could see his results I gave it a try and YES, IT DEFINITELY WORKS!

This is where I am going to cut out all the B.S. and tell you it is a commitment, about an hour a day, 6 days a week. And it will challenge you, but it is so worth it! Remember before when I said I had come to terms with my body? Well, I just hadn't discovered my real body! Now I rocking a totally leaner, more toned, more fit body (136 lb body to be exact). A lot of people think you need to already be “fit” to do this type of workout but you don't, you can take it at your level but I highly suggest pushing yourself for max results!

So let me break down the workout as simply as possible (for full program details Click Here), there are 3 program routines: Classic, Doubles and Lean. All 3 programs are 3 months, but the great thing is the variety. P90X combines weight training, cardio and yoga. I started with the Classic. The first 3 weeks repeat but each day of the week you do something different. After the first 3 weeks you have a recovery week, still working out 6 days but no weight training. Then it's onto month 2 which is set up just like month 1 except there are 2 new weight training workouts designed to really “rip” up the new muscles you got in month 1. After 3 weeks there is another recovery week. Month 3 is like months 1 and 2 except it mixes up all the weight training workouts, again followed by the last recovery week.

I think one of the best things about the program is Tony Horton himself and his team. They are “real” people and they keep the workout fun, entertaining, and motivating with their comments and interactions. It's a nice change from the perky female fitness instructor with her team of “beautiful”people.

There are things that enhance the workout, like following the meal plan. Because I am a vegetarian I created my own but it was really more about writing down my calorie intake to hold myself accountable. The meal plan suggests the P90X recovery drink but I found a suitable replacement from GNC. You can also purchase a pull up bar and weight set but if you don't want to make the investment you can always use bands. I used bands instead of the pull up bar but bought myself a great set of affordable adjustable weights by Jillian Michaels.

After my first round of P90X Classic I almost couldn't believe the results (not to mention the comments from others). I went from a size 12 to a size 6. I wanted to keep going and take it too the next level so I continued onto to the Doubles routine for 3 months, then in order to maintain I did the Lean routine. So after 9 months of P90X I was down to a size 4 (Bra 36 DD to 34 D). I didn't get a six pack but I was very happy with my 4 pack! It was time for a change and a break from P90X and that's when I discovered other BeachBody products like Insanity and 10 Minute Trainer. Now I mainly rotate through these 3 workout routines. It's almost 2 years since I first started the P90X program and it's still my favorite and most effective. However, I want to know if anyone has done the Tony Horton “1 on 1” workouts. Would love to hear some feedback!

P90X may be more expensive than other at-home workout programs but I promise you the results are worth it and you'll always go back to it! I have a million more things I could say about P90X and so do my family, friends, and colleagues that I introduced to the program, but if you really want to know more you know what to do!
